Madeleine is our new handbag. It is available in 3 colors, black, chocolate and honey. Size-wise, it's a little roomier than the Colette handbag but not too big or bulky to carry. It can be worn over the shoulder or across the body. It has an inside pocket and its great originality lies in its opening. Indeed, to create the Madeleine bag, we were inspired by doctors' bags from the 1900s. We created a kind of miniature of these old bags used by doctors. We have kept this special opening which allows the bag to be opened wide and makes everything inside very accessible and visible. Impossible not to find your things in this bag or to find yourself stuck without being able to grab your phone. This opening will make your life easier and will allow you to find a vintage side. Why Madeline?
If you've known Jack of Spades for a little while, you know that we like to give names of authors or prominent personalities to our products (for example the Jules passport cover for the writer Jules Verne or the Prosper travel bag for Prosper Merimee). We decided to name our new handbag Madeleine in reference to Madeleine Brès, the first female doctor in France.
Who is Madeleine Bres?
She was born on November 26, 1842 in Bouillargues and died on November 30, 1921 in Montrouge. Since childhood, she has been passionate about medicine and caring for people. She meets a religious sister who will take her under her wing and show her, explain to her and give her first aid. Later, she passes the baccalaureate and then enrolls in medical school.
The Madeleine doctor's handbag is made of vegetable-tanned full-grain cowhide leather. It is made in our workshop near Biarritz in France. This workshop is a family workshop which passes down saddlery leather goods know-how from generation to generation. Vegetable tanned leather makes it possible to have a product that will acquire a patina over time. Over time, your bag will become unique and embellished.
