You're hesitant to trade in your briefcase for a backpack. This is indeed a difficult question. it's like trading a suit for something more casual. It's definitely possible, and people are dressing more casually in the office these days. But what is considered "appropriate for work" can vary greatly from office to office, industry to industry. That's one of the problems with business casual: what's appropriate for one person may not be appropriate for you.
